#12: Ode To Цой – Музыка Волн (Цой cover)

Music of the waves, music of the wind

English Lyrics (Translated)

I see, how the waves wash away footprints in the sand
I hear, how the wind sings it’s strange song
I hear, how the strings of the trees play it
Music of the waves, music of the wind
Music of the waves, music of the wind

Here, It’s hard to say what asphalt is
Here, It’s hard to say what a car is
Here you need to throw water up with your hands
Music of the waves, music of the wind
Music of the waves, music of the wind

Who of you will remember of those, who went astray from the road
Who of you will remember of those, who laughed and sang
Who of you will remember, feeling the cold attachment
Music of the waves, music of the wind
Music of the waves, music of the wind

Music of the waves, music of the wind

Song

This is my favorite track from the album because it reminds me of all the acoustic Цой songs I played through the years. I took on a very broad collection of songs and dedicated a big part of my music to figuring out how these songs are played and the mentality behind the song meanings. Цой’s songs tend to have an undefined depth to them that pulls everyone in – so does this song. It’s an existential look at life. Some wonder that in this song Цой may have even wrote about his own death: a head-on auto collision. Yet again, the depth may be shallow that it’s about someone losing their way in life generally. One can appreciate the song, but I appreciate the outreach to so many perspectives; it’s relatable.

Observe Bonus Tracks

I knew this had to be the closing song on Observe, but I also knew that What’s My Role fit that spot, too. The original plan was for the album to include a few cover songs. (Сказка in between Moon and Science Is Bliss possibly.) I didn’t care to make money off of cover songs, just to have them on my cd. Upon researching internatinal copyright laws and trying to track down who I would need to either reach out to or who to pay for licensing.. Цой’s song ownership seems either complex or nonexistent. I decided to release them for free online as bonus tracks.

Recording

This song was recorded at an oceanfront home in Rockaway Beach Oregon, on May 15th 2012. The oceanfront sunset photo in my bio was taken there. I’ve always felt it be appropriate to record sessions at places you feel most self-focused, therefor able to get in your zone in performance. I’m not one to play guitar in a loud setting or to “just play a song”; I take music seriously, which also means that my environments can be suffocating as a hungry artist. I strongly believe in a place and time for everything. I had an acoustic recording session in the house, this song was one in the session. Even the multitracked solo guitar was just thrown over right after the recording. The song was recorded raw and remains raw, and I love that. Again, it comes back to listening to Цой’s and Аквариум’s acoustic albums that I enjoyed so much. Speaking of cover songs and this Rockaway Beach trip, here’s a little YouTube cover of Earthsuit‘s Sky Flashings recorded on that oceanfront deck late at night.

Future

I take music very seriously for the impact it can make, and russian rock n roll helped me find myself in being able to express all the compressed potential in me. Now, I can only look ahead to making a full-production music album-project, and writing new original content utilizing all my past experiences and vocal developments that Soul Avant has yet to hear.

This concludes the weekly series. Thanks for keeping up with the Song Wednesdays, reading insights on the songs from Observe. Thanks for listening. Pass it on to a friend and share. Like Soul Avant’s things wherever, and I appreciate feedback. 🙂 Song Wednesdays will be back, this is only my humble start.
